<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Just put your product in a light box and shoot right?</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">WRONG.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">I thought it would be easy, and admittedly, sometimes it was. But then there&rsquo;s the rest of the story. There&rsquo;s the products with small, clear plastic pieces, the products that attract dust no matter how many times you clean them off, and the products that just won&rsquo;t stand up on their own.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">It&rsquo;s a process of trial and error.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Here&rsquo;s some tips, so that you can hopefully skip the headaches having to go back and reshoot.</p>
<h2 id="1-plan-your-shoot-ahead-of-time" class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-h2 MuiTypography-gutterBottom">1. Plan your shoot ahead of time</h2>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Chances are you&rsquo;re shooting for a specific purpose, whether it&rsquo;s an Amazon listing, for your Shopify store, or whatever other platform. Each platform will have its own specifications that you should be familiar with.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Additionally, every product is different, so plan out what you want to showcase, and in what order, before you even think of pressing the shutter button. This will save you from missing shots and having to go back, re-setup, and shoot again.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">It sounds obvious, but if your product is white, you should probably use a different coloured background&hellip;</p>

<h2 id="2-sort-out-your-lighting" class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-h2 MuiTypography-gutterBottom">2. Sort Out Your Lighting</h2>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Light boxes are great, but only if you know how to use them appropriately for the specific product. Managing shadows, glare, and light temperature will ensure your photos come out much cleaner. I generally shoot with the light box are bright as it goes and closed on all sides to reduce shadows as much as possible. You&rsquo;ll have to compensate for the brightness with your camera settings.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">I often find shiny products (glass or metal) will reflect the lights in the light box, resulting in a little square of light being visible in the photo. Although most people probably don&rsquo;t even notice, it drives me absolutely crazy. I&rsquo;ve found that putting tissue paper overtop of the LEDs diffuses the light enough to avoid the ugly reflection, without compromising brightness or creating shadows.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Lastly, choosing the correct light temperature will make a big difference in your photos. Natural light is about 5000K, which is what I prefer to take my photos at, as its neither too warm (yellow) nor too cold (blue). The auto white balance setting in your camera will probably do a pretty good job, but you can also manually set it to 5000K to ensure your whites come out pure.</p>
<h2 id="3-principles-of-design" class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-h2 MuiTypography-gutterBottom">3. Principles Of Design</h2>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Some product shoots are more complex than others. You may be simply laying out your product pieces on a white background, but even then you&rsquo;ll need to understand things like balance, rhythm, hierarchy, white space, emphasis, and/or contrast. If your set up looks odd with your eyes, it&rsquo;ll probably look odd through the lens too.</p>

<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">This is a short point, but set your camera to shoot RAW if you can. RAW files have much more information in them, which makes them larger but much more forgiving when you go to edit (yes, you should be editing too!).</p>
<h2 id="5-clean-your-product-and-camera" class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-h2 MuiTypography-gutterBottom">5. Clean Your Product AND Camera</h2>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Nothing is worse than going through all this work, finally taking your photos, and realizing that your product is covered in little white specs or that you have a dust on your sensor that is leaving a big grey smudge on your photo (pay particular attention if you&rsquo;re using a mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera).</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">All you need is a dust blower and a sensor cleaning kit. Blow the dust off your product and sensor prior to shooting, and clean your sensor every couple shoots if you&rsquo;ve been changing lenses. Dust is easy to edit out of photos in Photoshop, but it can be time consuming if you have to do it for an entire shoot&rsquo;s worth of images.</p>
<h2 id="6-use-a-tripod" class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-h2 MuiTypography-gutterBottom">6. Use a Tripod</h2>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">One of the joys of product photography is that your shutter speed doesn&rsquo;t really matter for static objects, so you can avoid noise with a low ISO, have a sharper image with a smaller aperture, and have appropriate brightness and sharpness with a longer shutter speeds &mdash; as long as you use a tripod. I like to use the 2 second shutter delay on my camera in order to avoid any blur caused by camera shake when I press the shutter button.</p>

<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">In my experience, auto focus usually does the job; however, there are times when I like to use manual focus, focus peaking, and focus magnifier to make sure that my desired part of the product is ultra-crisp. I especially like to do this when I plan on cropping in on a specific part of the photo and need it to be sharp.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">On that note, become familiar with your lens and which aperture its sharpest at. I&rsquo;ve been using the Sony 18-105 F4, which I&rsquo;ve found is sharpest around F9.</p>

People that have no connection to your business either&nbsp;<strong>geographically or through mutual interest</strong>&nbsp;are unlikely to engage with your community. We accumulated a large following in South America, which is amazing, but our business is not set up to reach that far, so building a community so far south is not necessarily beneficial. YET!</p>

Instagram is great to engage with a consumer audience, however, a platform like LinkedIn is superior for many B2B interactions. Of course, Facebook is the largest social media platform and is a great way for your audience to contact you, as well as for you to join related groups.</p>

Finding the right therapist can be overwhelming at the best of times and completely unsuccessful at the worst. <p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph"><a class="MuiTypography-root MuiLink-root MuiLink-underlineHover MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-colorPrimary MuiTypography-paragraph" href="https://ramcanyon.com/">Ram Canyon</a>&nbsp;was founded in 2019 as a passion project while I was studying Industrial Design in Toronto. Coming from Calgary, the wilderness has always been incredibly important to me. Moving to Toronto for school was a bit of a shock, and adjusting to the glass towers, metro navigation, and massive crowds of busy people forced me to think about how I could manifest my love for the outdoors in such a setting. When my backpack died and fell apart I decided to take it upon myself to learn to build one myself, and it's taken off ever since.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Over the course of a summer of unfamiliar lifestyle modifications, I've spent a lot of time in solitude to keep myself, and my friends and family safe and healthy. The majority of my time has been spent in my studio, researching, designing, and fulfilling orders for keen customers! Ram Canyon strategically uses up-cycled fleece sweaters to create many of our packs - reducing the pack's carbon footprint, and ensuring its durability.</p>
<p class="MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-body1 MuiTypography-paragraph">Ram Canyon represents a fictional place on earth that embodies the creativity and adventurous spirit of myself and my customers. I like to think it manifests itself wherever the bag owner may be.</p>
